Admissions of failure for Facebook, which will deploy its metaverse on the web

Meta is working on a web version of its Horizon Worlds metaverse.

Meta is working on a web version of its Horizon Worlds social metaverse platform, an executive announced Thursday. This new development will expand the platform and evolve it beyond its current form, which only works with VR Quest virtual reality headsets.

Horizon Worlds had been presented as THE metaverse that would change everything. The lack of enthusiasm for virtual reality has apparently prompted the company to review its strategy and bring its virtual world to screens. An approach that already leaves some doubts since a 3D virtual world is by default designed to be explored either with a VR headset or a gamepad.

This barely concealed admission of failure accompanies a gigantic controversy that has shaken the sector in recent days. A few days ago, Meta announced that it would allow content creators to sell items in its metaverse, while reserving a 45% commission on each sale.

In the face of criticism, CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth said that this future “web version” would require a more reasonable percentage of 25%. It is “much lower” than rivals like Roblox, the official claimed.

Regarding the costs, the technical director wanted to provide an explanation. He alleges that this rate was necessary to “help build a different ecosystem”. Meta achieves this value by taking a 30% slice of revenue through the Quest Store, then 25% of the remaining amount in Horizon Worlds.

“We’re taking a different approach with our margin on Quest devices to make them accessible to more people. We are committed to helping build a different ecosystem. Developers are already seeing success on the Quest Store alone – over 120 titles grossing over $1 million” justifies the technical director on Twitter.

Moreover, there are still some gray areas regarding the deployment of the web platform. Andreww Bosworth did not say more regarding how the web edition works or when it will be launched. Earlier this week, the company had already revealed to the media that it was working on bringing Horizon to mobile phones later this year.
