The trial at the Mixed Jury Court of Giannitsa for death of 14-year-old Georgia from Epanomi Thessaloniki, after surgery to place a gastric band, in June 2021, was postponed.
The doctor who performed the surgery was referred to the defendant’s dock to be tried and is being prosecuted – among other things – for fatal exposure. The postponement was requested by the defense, while the new hearing will be determined by the Appeals Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki.
Among the restrictive conditions imposed on the doctor is not to participate in surgeries until the case is heard. In order to impose the specific condition, the judges of the competent Judicial Council took into account his two previous convictions for similar incidents, after similar surgeries (the first one became irreversible, while the second one is being tried these days in the second degree).
In his statements, the 14-year-old’s father, who is a priest, asked for justice to be granted so that “there won’t be another Gogo”.
In addition to the charge of fatal exposure, the surgeon faces misdemeanor counts of forgery and misdemeanor forgery. The first, according to the indictment, is connected to the minor’s signature which he allegedly forged before the operation, while the second to the visual material (video) from the operation, when this was requested by her parents in view of their appeal to the Criminal Justice .
New prosecutions
In the meantime, according to information, new prosecutions were brought for the same case, following a related lawsuit by the 14-year-old’s family, for the content of the doctor’s witness statements at the Multi-member Court of First Instance of Thessaloniki, where the claim for compensation by the relatives of the minor was discussed.
According to the same information, they are directed against the doctor, a relative of his and two of his colleagues, while they concern, as the case may be, the acts of attempted court fraud, simple cooperation in the previous one, false testimony and moral abetment in false testimony, in series.
The case file was forwarded to an investigator.
