Lebanese director Adel Sarhan began his artistic career more than 20 years ago, during which he presented several successful films that achieved widespread popularity and won awards, during which he also signed several singing videos, and won the “Murex” award for the clip of the song “Bab Am Yabki” by the artist Assi El-Hellani, and he is still… He continues his journey in filming clips, as we met him during his visit to Beirut, and following his busy time filming clips for the artists Assi El-Hellani, “I Am Eager for You,” Zein Al-Omar, “Ya Nyali,” and Laroussi’s “Cobra,” among other works, he revealed that he will participate in the drama as part of a new decade.
* It is noticeable that you have repeatedly collaborated with the artist LaRussi, and today you are busy filming the clip for her song “Cobra.” So what can you tell us regarding this cooperation?
– I got acquainted with the artist LaRussi in Dubai, where we filmed her first clip, and it achieved great success. Our cooperation continued in several clips, as we think in the same creative way that departs from the prevailing classicism, and LaRoussi is an international artist, starting from the Netherlands and America, and her former distributor and songwriter. It is produced by the artist Jay Lo, and other international artists. I was excited to work with her to present my renewed ideas and for working with her to be on a global level, rich in innovation and creativity. I do not underestimate the value of dealing with local artists at all, but Western LaRussy culture allows for a tendency toward the unfamiliar.
* What do you say regarding “Cobra”?
This song will be one of the most beautiful songs in the new album by the artist LaRussi, and although it comes out of the Arab stereotype and the narrow box, we do not offend modesty, and we do not present any vulgar scene. Rather, the viewer will feel that he is in front of a dancing artistic painting and beautiful scenography.
* What regarding the artist Assi El-Helani and his new song?
– Assi Al-Hillani, the companion of success, dealing with him is very wonderful, and his latest song, “I’m Longing for You,” was put on the market and achieved millions of views, and it was filmed in the Aamiq region of the Bekaa, with a romantic atmosphere and an atmosphere of clear harmony.
* What are the conditions for a successful clip for you?
The elements of a successful clip are words, melody, sound, and image, and every detail involving the camera, lenses, and lighting makes a difference, and for this difference to be positive, it must be coupled with human creativity, and rich in the feelings that the viewer receives.
Advanced technologies
* To what degree do advanced technologies play a role in achieving creativity in directing?
One of the paradoxes in the world of photography is that it is achieved using a regular camera or a smartphone, but its results differ because as the circle of technology adoption expands, leading to artificial intelligence, which is currently revolutionizing, we find that we lack sense at work. Our adoption of technology greatly facilitates our technical task. With the “press of a button,” we can present multiple scenes and create a “computerizer” for images, but without feeling. Artificial intelligence is unable to translate our feelings. Therefore, I say that technology is a double-edged sword. What is important is that we use it with high human intelligence.
* What regarding directing films and series? Is there anything new on fire?
– I had a project to film a film and a series before the revolution and Corona, but unfortunately they were postponed, and soon I will start filming a new dramatic “Decade” and leave it to reveal the details of the work to the production company. I am also preparing for a new cinematic film, waiting for “Spencer” for it.
* What regarding your participation in the Ramadan drama?
-I think that from now until two years I will turn to drama in its various times. I have presented 1,500 clips.
* are you tired?
-I have to leave the room to others, as everyone is waiting for “what will I do for drama,” especially since a number of those who are professional in drama today were my students, and this makes me happy.
* Are there any projects in the Emirates?
Being a resident of the Emirates since 2019, there is no doubt that I have a lot of preparations with Arab and Lebanese artists there, and during the past year I filmed in the Emirates with Ihab Tawfiq, Hamada Hilal, and regarding 20 male and female singers from Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria, and I like that the Emirates is a meeting place between Arab creatives. And foreigners.
