ADEDY is going on a 24-hour strike for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, following the corresponding decision of the GSEE, in order for the strike to be General and have pan-labor-pan-employee characteristics.
It is recalled that initially ADEDY had announced a strike for November 13, followed by GSEE which announced for November 20 and then ADEDY moved the date to coincide with the strikes in the public and private sectors.
The letter sent by the Executive Committee of ADEDY to the administration of GSEE:
“Colleagues,
The Executive Committee of A.D.E.D.Y. proposes for the General Strike of the 20th of November a common platform in Klathmonos Square and a common banner.
We point out that the Executive Committee of ADEDY, like GSEE, has designated Klathmonos Square as the meeting place. Since we have so far received no positive response from the telephone communications we have had with members of your management, please let us know as soon as possible whether you agree with our proposal.
The installation of two stands in the same place, on the same day and at the same time, will have an extremely negative impact on the workers and society.”
The announcement of the GSEE on the strike on November 20
Dealing with punctuality, the increased prices of rents and the housing market, as well as the restoration of the Collective Labor Law, were at the center of today’s Plenary meeting of the GSEE.
The Confederation, given the fact that the Government is not taking any substantive measures to address these critical issues plaguing private sector workers but instead is implementing measures that are exacerbating their problems, has decided:
the realization of a 24-hour General Strike for Wednesday 20 November 2024
the implementation of an information campaign, which will start immediately in all the regions of the country with particular emphasis on Athens and Thessaloniki, with the aim of massive and unifying participation in the 24-hour General Strike.
The Government is unable to implement policies that strengthen the purchasing power of employees, which has decreased by 8% since 2019. The bonus policy and passes unfortunately do not solve the problems. Immediate measures are needed to deal with the oligopolistic structure of the market and the cartels, the restructuring of labor relations and the Collective Labor Law as well as the implementation of social housing programs with the reserve of 1.5 billion from the former Labor Home.
These measures meet the real needs of workers in the private sector and we will fight for the implementation of these measures.
Strike on Wednesday 20 November: What will happen to the means of transport
In the meantime, despite the fact that the strike has been planned since September, there is still no clear information on whether and how Public Transport will be affected.
Buses usually operate from 09:00 to 21:00 participating in the strike with work stoppages while the Metro also operates at specific times to serve the citizens who want to participate in the strike march. Nevertheless, within the next few days it is expected to be announced what will be done with the means of public transport.
What will happen to the schools?
Many school departments will remain closed on Wednesday, November 20, as many teachers are expected to participate in the nationwide strike announced by ADEDY.
So far, the teachers’ unions have not issued any announcement, however teachers and professors are always covered by the “umbrella” of the Supreme Administration of Public Employees Unions.
Private teachers are also on strike
It is worth noting that participation in the 24-hour strike on November 20 has also been announced by private teachers through OIELE. In their relevant announcement, the private teachers emphasize that they are on strike with their main demands being the restoration of the collective bargaining regime in Tutoring Schools, Foreign Language Centers and SAEK (formerly IEK) and salary increases and the return of gifts to private schools.
As they proclaim in their text: “We ask for brave increases and reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salary! Teachers must work with decent working conditions and pay, they must enter their classrooms with their heads held high and not impoverished and humiliated.”

**Interview with Maria Nikolakopoulou, Spokesperson for ADEDY**
**Editor**: Good afternoon, Maria. Thank you for joining us. ADEDY has announced a 24-hour strike for November 20, 2024. What prompted this decision?
**Maria Nikolakopoulou**: Good afternoon, and thank you for having me. The decision to strike stems from a culmination of critical issues affecting workers, such as rising rents, stagnant wages, and the urgent need for reform in the Collective Labor Law. We believe collaboration with GSEE and the unification of our efforts is crucial to bring attention to these pressing matters.
**Editor**: Can you elaborate on the planned activities for the strike on November 20?
**Maria Nikolakopoulou**: Certainly. We have proposed a common platform and banner for the General Strike, to be assembled in Klathmonos Square. It’s essential for us to present a united front. We’ve reached out to GSEE to coordinate this, as we do not want to create division among workers with stands set up in the same location.
**Editor**: The GSEE has also highlighted the government’s inaction regarding the rising cost of living and the decline in purchasing power. How do you believe this strike will address those issues?
**Maria Nikolakopoulou**: The strike aims to amplify the voices of workers who feel overlooked. The government has not implemented effective policies to support employees, and our collective participation on the 20th will send a strong message that these issues cannot be ignored any longer. We will demand immediate action to restructure labor relations and provide solutions such as social housing programs.
**Editor**: There seems to be uncertainty regarding public transport on the day of the strike. Can you provide any clarity on this matter?
**Maria Nikolakopoulou**: While we have prepared for the strike, the specific arrangements regarding public transport will be finalized shortly. Typically, buses operate with work stoppages, but we encourage everyone to stay tuned for updates to ensure their participation and smooth commuting on that day.
**Editor**: Education seems to be affected as well, with many schools expected to close. How do you foresee the response from teachers’ unions?
**Maria Nikolakopoulou**: Yes, many teachers plan to join us in solidarity as education workers are also facing similar challenges. Although unions have not yet made formal announcements, we expect widespread participation as teachers realize the importance of standing together in this fight.
**Editor**: Thank you, Maria, for your insights and for sharing ADEDY’s plans for the upcoming strike. We wish you the best in your efforts.
**Maria Nikolakopoulou**: Thank you for having me. Let’s hope for a successful strike and meaningful changes for all workers.
