GaPhilip Lazzarini, the spokesman for the UN agency for Palestine refugees, said that the aid arriving in trucks entering Syria cannot solve the problems of hundreds of thousands of refugees. Philippe Lazzarini told the UN Security Council that the handful of convoys allowed through Rafah were nothing compared to the needs of the more than two million people trapped in Gaza.
According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, 33 trucks carrying water, food and medical equipment entered Gaza through Rafah on Sunday. Before the war, another 500 trucks entered Gaza daily. The UN General Assembly called for a ceasefire last week, but the Security Council has yet to reach an agreement. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said they were failing even though they might have done something.
64 UN workers were killed in three weeks. Hours before the UN emergency meeting, Lazzarini said it was the first time that so many colleagues had died in such a short period of time.
