Addressing the Rising Cancer Cases in Women: Urgency of Action and Employment Support – Insights from RoseUp

Cancer cases are constantly increasing among women. Between 15 and 20% of workers are affected by the disease. Isabelle Huet, director of RoseUp, warns of the urgency of mobilizing on issues such as employment or precariousness linked to illness.

Pink October, breast cancer awareness month, is in full swing. This year, it has a particular resonance. Indeed, the latest cancer figures in women are not good : the number of cases constantly increasing while it stabilizes in men: +0.3% for breast cancer and +4.3% for lung cancer compared to 2010¹. And according to researchers, the number of new cases of cancer among people under 50 worldwide will increase by more than 30% by 2030².

Today in France, between 15 and 20% of workers are affected by the disease³. Beyond the traditional focus on screening and research, it is urgent that all stakeholders – public authorities, professional circles, sick people and community stakeholders – mobilize together over the long term to address this employment issue. and precariousness linked to illness.

At RoseUp, we have developed experience and field expertise for more than 12 years the impacts of which have just been measured by a study carried out by two independent firms Agence Phare and Archipel&Co with the support of our partners Pfizer and La Roche Posay. This work highlights several areas of work.

Firstly, in a context where 2/3 of sick people suffer following-effects up to 5 years following diagnosis, the study highlights that for 74% of our members, being supported as early as possible in their care journey strongly contributes to a return to a professional life in the best conditions and more broadly to better preservation of their quality of life.

Within our physical and remote RoseUp Houses, women benefit from what we call supportive care to combat the side effects of treatments – fatigue, pain, cognitive disorders, sexual difficulties, etc. – from the start of the treatments. treatments: adapted physical activity, nutrition, socio-aesthetics, art therapy, discussion groups with an onco-psychologist, information conferences on returning to work, etc.

Unfortunately, there are very strong territorial inequalities in access to this type of system despite the still largely embryonic implementation of the basket of supportive care dedicated to post-cancer treatment.

Likewise, the study proves that, for people who need it, benefiting from specific, individualized and multidisciplinary support, in maintaining and returning to employment, is very effective. So, 86% of our beneficiaries emphasize that our programs have made it easier to continue their professional lives, particularly for those with less qualifications.. However, here once more, unfortunately, in France today, only a minority of working people suffering from cancer benefit from such support.

Another lesson: access to social rights, particularly for working people, is an obstacle course. Not only do most women who arrive in our Houses do not know the existence of their rights and when they do know them, they do not understand them. They are therefore very far from being able to mobilize them themselves given the enormous administrative complexity they face. Hence the importance of information that is both reliable and accessible, but also of support. Thus, the impact study highlights that at the end of the support within the framework of the employment system, 88% of our M@ Maison RoseUp members believe they are able to assert their rights.

Faced with the very strong increase in active cancer patients in France, women in particular, there is an urgent need for action. Beyond the individual destinies disrupted by the ordeal of the disease, the consequences of inaction are enormous on a macro-economic level, as the Asterès firm has already analyzed in 2020. Effective solutions coming from players on the ground such as RoseUp exist.

Let’s act collectively today!
