An increase in wages is useless in the face of the labor shortage, according to the president of the Swiss Employers’ Union (UPS), Severin Moser. It is particularly damaging that public authorities use this leverage, he says. An intensification of wage competition will not lead to more job offers, declares the president of the UPS on Saturday in the The New Zurich Times.
Companies should think about other ways to remain attractive to new and old employees, he believes. Better working conditions and additional benefits, such as affordable childcare places, could be imagined, argues the economist.

Foreign labor
To the criticism that foreign labor is too cheap for employers, Severin Moser responds that the already trained national workforce is too weak. “We don’t bring in foreigners because we don’t want to invest in nationals,” he says.
But Switzerland cannot play on the migration rope as it pleases either, believes the UPS boss. Neighboring countries face similar problems: “Germany, France and Italy are not going to watch us take their workforce with higher wages,” he says.
