Jeju Island, Korea’s representative travel destination, is limiting the number of rental cars to reduce environmental pollution and resolve traffic congestion.

However, it is said that illegal business of secretly bringing in and renting rental cars from other regions taking advantage of the recent peak season is rampant.

Handam Village, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, is famous for its emerald-colored sea and drama filming location.

The parking lot is full of rental cars from tourists.

I checked rental cars with enforcement equipment.

Unlike vehicles where the vehicle number, model, and company name are immediately identified, vehicles without any information appear.

After checking, it is a car registered in Haenam, Jeollanam-do, not Jeju, and it is an illegal rental car.

Rent-a-cars cannot arbitrarily change the operating area without the approval of the governor.

About one out of seven rental cars standing in the parking lot here was confirmed as a vehicle registered in another area.

During peak season, when demand for rental cars is soaring, regarding 20 cars are caught every day.

Customers have no way to know if it is an illegal business rental car.

″I was here in April. It was a rental car that I (rented) when I brought my parents… (Her husband) said it was better than other places… ″

Jeju Island limits the number of rental cars to 28,000 in order to reduce environmental pollution and traffic congestion, but if illegal rental cars increase, tourists and residents of Jeju will inevitably suffer damage.

″Local businesses are losing sales and residents are suffering from illegal parking and traffic jams.″

If caught operating illegally, a fine of 1 million won per vehicle will be imposed.

However, during the peak season, the demand for rental cars is so high that companies continue to operate illegally while paying fines, so it is pointed out that effective measures such as suspension or cancellation of business are needed.
