Addressing the Growing Trash Problem Caused by Partying Tourists in Mallorca: A Call for Drastic Action

Residents on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca have been struggling with the same problem for years: the party-mad crowds of tourists leave mountains of rubbish along the beach promenade following their nights of drinking.

If you have to leave the house early, the first thing you have to do is wade through a thick carpet of rubbish on the street. Beverage cans, fast food wrappers, handkerchiefs and plastic cups tell the story of last night every morning.

“Tourism here in the area is a mess,” complain residents in the “Mallorcazeitung”. The chaos now begins earlier every year. While previously July and August were the most problematic, now it often starts in May.

The locals are disappointed with the policy: “It seems that there is no party that is able to solve the problem,” one is quoted as saying.

They even get support from the tourism industry itself: “A lot of larger groups come, and many of them are already preparing for uncontrolled celebrations at home.” That says the chairman of the hoteliers’ association on the island, Pedro Marin.

Unfortunately, drinking tourism has once once more increased significantly. “Drastic action once morest the excesses therefore seems to me to be a desperate but only possible measure to prevent this behavior.”
