Addressing Nuisances: Residents’ Committee Fights for Quality of Life in Buston District Amid RER Construction

In 2021, a committee of residents was formed in the Buston district, in Limelette, to bring together the questioning of the inhabitants of avenue Demolder and the surrounding area following the nuisances created by the RER construction site near the Ottignies station. This committee has identified several: “Nocturnal noise, non-compliance with the highway code, dangerous roads for the various users, repeated incivility, fouling of the public road, cracked houses, omnipresent dust. For several years, most of the nuisances linked to the construction site have converged on the ‘Demolder Ave.’

To the municipal council

This Tuesday, June 27, at the municipal council, Councilor Paule-Rita Maltier, who lives in Buston, recalled the fed up of citizens: “Since 2021, citizens have been calling out to Infrabel following violations related to the site. The trucks lose part of their load, stones fall on the road, they are not picked up. The road is clogged, the street furniture is damaged, the drivers are aggressive.

The need for this project is in no way questioned, but this in no way justifies the growing insecurity in the public space and the exaggerated reduction in the quality of life of the inhabitants of the district.

And to continue: “Several constructive proposals have been made to Infrabel, several inquiries have been made to municipal elected officials from the majority and the opposition. Several complaints have been lodged with the local police. All have had no effect.”

Action “Pickup”

The residents took action last Saturday. They picked up the stone “fallen on the public space during an infernal evening, June 10”. Infrabel had done their job for them by already cleaning the roads on June 21: “We have once more picked up a good quantity of stones. We ask for respect for the 50 km/h speed limit (or 30 km/h zones), respect for the program announced to local residents, for the well-being of local residents, for the Code of the road and we ask that the trucks be covered.”

Tuesday evening, the residents’ committee “offered” stones to elected municipal officials. He also gave them the text of their demands as well as a poster “Infrabel = Infernal”.
