House Representative Delcy Isaza called attention to the need for increased attention to mental health issues.

“It is a fundamental aspect in people’s lives, which directly affects their well-being and quality of life. In the department of Tolima, as in many other regions of the country, there are various problems that have a negative impact on the mental health of the population,” Isaza said in an open letter released this morning.

The communication also indicates that the epidemiological bulletins published by the Dimension of Social Coexistence and Mental Health of Tolima, have registered 513 suicide attempts in the first six months of the year.

“Our young people are the population group that presents the highest incidence rate and according to sex, 312 women tried to end their lives. The National Mental Health Observatory reported that by 2022 in our department there were 483 cases of attempted suicide, of which 123 were completed, evidencing that men have the highest mortality rate (9.1); family problems, couple conflicts and economic problems, mainly due to unemployment, are the main triggers for suicide attempts. That is why it is necessary to implement alternatives and actions that strengthen this aspect in the region”, indicates Isaza.

The congresswoman has been leading dialogues with different political, governmental, religious, institutional and citizen actors to develop strategies and actions that are aimed at strengthening mental health in Tolima.
