As well as the care of inpatients, the panchayat’s top priority is to solve the problem of isolation. The project was called Suswanam. Many people feel isolated not because they have no one to look up to. The vice-chairman of the planning committee of the panchayat V.K. Unnikrishnan says. Loneliness begins when one realizes that one’s role in many things is diminishing. The solution to loneliness is not therapy, but companionship and interaction. Clubs and age festivals help in this.

Arimpur model of discovery
The first step was to form clusters of 30-40 houses for the elderly. 10 such clusters have been formed centered around Anganwadis. The approach was not to provide something for senior citizens, but to provide them with the services they need and involve them in delivering them. The aim of the survey was to find out even those who have not received any kind of help. Such a network system is a feature of the panchayat’s elderly welfare work.
1000 per service
1000 volunteers selected for elderly care. They are given phased training under the leadership of Palium India. There is one volunteer each to look after 10 people. The project is going ahead with the cooperation of Kudumbashree, voluntary organizations, hospitals etc. These projects have the full support of the governing body headed by panchayat president Smitha Jayakumar. Those who walk now may be in bed tomorrow. The Panchayat is devising activities ahead of that. This foresight is what differentiates their work.
