Addressing Homelessness in Quebec: The Rise of Tiny Houses as a Solution

The itinerant population is forced to “adapt” following the dismantling of more than 4,000 illegal camps in 2023.

“It’s a shame, it’s sad. The homeless community adjusts and spreads out almost everywhere on private land, under the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and land belonging to the federal or provincial authorities, which makes it increasingly difficult to locate them and to help them,” said Luc Desjardins, general director of the L’Itinéraire community group.

According to the expert, shelters are overwhelmed, lack of housing, post-pandemic effects and immigration are the main reasons that keep people in a situation of homelessness.

“It was predictable,” believes Mr. Desjardins, who adds that demand is growing faster than supply.

The construction of tiny houses might be a solution to the homelessness crisis facing Quebec, according to him.

“In Canada, there are groups. In Medicine Hat, in Alberta, we found solutions and in Fredericton, there is a small community of tiny houses and it works very well,” he says.

“It takes leadership, it takes everyone working together and it also takes money” and “it’s always a war” between the different government authorities, says the CEO of L’Itinéraire.
