French-speaking Belgium has one of the most unequal education systems in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). More than elsewhere, academic results depend on the environment of origin. To reduce these educational inequalities, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation invests several tens of millions of euros each year (98.6 million in 2022-2023) in schools with a so-called low socio-economic index. These schools, also called “differentiated support” schools, receive additional funds, in particular to recruit teaching staff or purchase equipment.
