Additive Industries will integrate Additive Assurance’s in-situ process monitoring system into 3D metal printers. AMiRIS should help solve quality assurance (QA) issues by giving operators real-time insight into the printing process.

Additional Guarantee iThis is an Australian company that has developed a laser powder bed metal printer monitoring system using AMiRIS and will be available in 2021. The system will be available for the MetalFab G2 and the recently launched Metalfab 300 Flex. The two companies will work together to integrate this quality assurance tool into metal printers.

The device is installed on the outside of the machine.

Increasing demand for process monitoring and quality assurance

As additive manufacturing printers increase in build speed and productivity, the need for process monitoring and quality assurance has become critical in many industries to ensure repeatability and produce high yields. AMiRIS is therefore primarily a logical extension of the MetalFab family, addressing QA (quality assurance) challenges with state-of-the-art in-situ monitoring. This enables manufacturing companies to detect and resolve quality issues during the production process. By providing real-time insights into the production process, AMiRIS strengthens certification and quality assurance, ultimately reducing production cycle times and increasing confidence in the quality of the final product. The monitoring system generates detailed 2D/3D maps to identify problem areas; works with multi-laser systems and collects all relevant machine data in one place for QA reporting. The system uses near-infrared sensors combined with machine learning technology.

A broader commitment

The collaboration between Additive Industries and Additive Assurance is expected to bring wider deployment of field monitoring to users of the MetalFab product portfolio. Ultimately, this will increase and broaden the applications of laser powder bed additive manufacturing technology. “The collaboration with Additive Assurance fits seamlessly with our commitment to expand the possibilities of metal additive manufacturing,” said Mark Massey, CEO of Additive Industries. “By integrating the field monitoring system into the metal printer, it provides users with greater flexibility.”
