In recent days, many of you have contacted our editorial staff via the orange Alert us button to report a malfunction of the Adblue system on your vehicle. This tank contains an additive used in diesel vehicles to meet Euro 6 standards. Citroën and Peugeot brand cars are affected.

“The Adblue system is faulty on my Citroën C4 Cactus. Citroën refuses to pay. 1,350 euros at my expense…”castigates Antoine. “I am currently also a victim of the Adblue problem on my Peugeot 208”, sorry Leandro.

“We are owners of a Citroën C4 Picasso. Unfortunately, today I learned that the Adblue pump is faulty and that it needs to be replaced. It costs €1,000…”says Stephanie. “The worst thing is that no one has the part in stock and so we have to wait for the repair. The delivery time is unknown! We are not the only ones in the case.”

To better understand the extent of the phenomenon in Belgium, Testachats called on the owners of a Citroën or Peugeot diesel car, victims of such a problem, to report themselves. In the space of two weeks, the organization says it has already received more than 1,000 complaints.

What is the Adblue system?

Adblue is an additive that mixes with the harmful exhaust gases produced by cars and converts them into nitrogen and water. In this way, cars emit much less toxic and polluting nitrogen oxide. Diesel cars that use such a system have an AdBlue tank, in addition to their usual diesel tank. This must be refueled regularly, the driver being warned via a sensor in the tank and a warning light on the dashboard. If the tank is empty, the car will not start.

Many malfunctions

In recent months, many vehicles from the Citroën and Peugeot brands have experienced malfunctions in their Adblue system. Some owners receive alerts indicating that the tank is almost empty, which do not disappear even following filling. In other cases, a message on the dashboard indicates “Engine error: vehicle to be repaired” or “Starting prohibited within 1,000 kilometres”.

The proposed solution is often a replacement of the AdBlue tank, “but the cost of this operation can reach 1,200 € at the owner’s expense”, specifies Testachats. Due to the scarcity of spare parts, waiting times for a repair can also take weeks, which is an additional inconvenience.

By asking for testimonials via its websiteTestachats aims to “to be able to challenge car manufacturers whose vehicles are affected by the AdBlue problem in order to be able to find pragmatic solutions for the owners concerned”explains Julie Frère, spokesperson for Testachats.
