“These failures linked to the AdBlue system have been known to manufacturers for a long time” deplores UFC-Que Choisir. The consumer defense association criticizes the automotive groups for having “preferred to close my eyes” on breakdowns caused by the AdBlue emission control system, in order to continue to “sell these failing vehicles”. Consequently, the association announces, Wednesday July 12, to seize the General direction of competition, consumption and the repression of the frauds (DGCCRF).

AdBlue is used to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions from the exhaust pipes of diesel-powered cars, which are over a decade old. UFC-Que Choisir was alerted by more than 1,700 drivers who suffered breakdowns. The latter received alerts on their dashboards mentioning a “emission control fault” or one “impossible to start in XXX kilometers”, forcing them to go to a garage. The repair, which costs vehicle owners an average of 1,000 euros, “is not always conclusive”adds the UFC.

The association calls for the launch of an investigation “on a European scale” on manufacturers’ practices with AdBlue and compensation for drivers. The European Commission has already been alerted on this subject by UFC-Que Choisir.
