Adapting Unemployment Systems for Extreme Weather Conditions: A Call by Embuild in Belgium

2024-01-07 11:02:26

With the polar cold set to settle in Belgium in the coming days and while the intense rainfall of recent months has already caused delays for construction companies, the sectoral organization Embuild is calling on Sunday to adapt the current unemployment system bad weather, by allowing workers to be temporarily unemployed for half a day instead of a full day.

During cold periods, “it is possible to work in construction for several hours in the late morning and early followingnoon. This is why we want temporary unemployment in the event of extreme weather conditions to also be possible for half-days, as is the case in service voucher companies and in school transport“, claims Niko Demeester, managing director of Embuild, the construction federation.
