Christian Levrat, president of La Poste and UNICEF Switzerland, was invited on Monday in La Matinale de la RTS to speak regarding the challenges of the yellow giant. The Fribourgeois pleads for the company to work as close as possible to the population, in order to face and adapt to the evolution of its needs.
Chairman of the board of directors of La Poste for three years, Christian Levrat returned Monday in La Matinale de la RTS on the issues facing the yellow giant. The recently announced restructurings, which will in particular lead to an increase in prices, are deemed necessary by the former president of the Swiss Socialist Party (2012-2021).
“The public service is not a museum. The needs of the public are changing very quickly, we see this with payment traffic: not so long ago, it was customary to make payments at post offices However, this traffic fell by 20% last year and by 20% also in 2021. And the trends for this year are similar,” he warns.
The digitization of payment traffic, but also that of mail, must be taken into account in La Poste’s calculations, because payment traffic contributes to financing the costs of the post office network. “We have to find solutions. Today we have a transformation of the company that we must support, because it corresponds to a transformation of the needs of our customers. That is what modernizing the public service is: following the needs of our customers where they are”, emphasizes the Fribourgeois.

The only way to keep jobs at La Poste is to have benefits that match what people want
Christian Levrat, Chairman of the Board of La Poste
Proximity to the population
To do this, it is necessary to multiply the points of contact on the ground with the population, believes Christian Levrat, who cites the example of the “My Post 24” machines where it is possible to drop off and collect parcels at any time of the day. day and night. Nevertheless, “this does not mean that we should not, here and there, restructure the network or that we should not automate certain services”, he slips.
These measures also have an impact on employment. But for the president, “if we do nothing, if we just watch mail volumes drop, payment traffic disappear and people’s habits change, jobs will be doomed”.
The only way to maintain them is to guarantee the relevance of the universal service offered by the yellow giant and to offer services “which correspond to what people want”, insists the manager. “It’s obvious in terms of society, but also for La Poste employees who want a job that makes sense.”
