The changes in garbage collection in Brussels took place a little over three weeks ago. As a reminder, it is the transition to a single collection of white bags instead of two in ten municipalities. It is also the obligation, for everyone, to place their organic waste in orange bags, collected separately. This last measure stems from the European obligation to sort organic waste from 2024. These changes are binding in some cases and require a little adaptation.
When you live in a small apartment, with no cellar, garden or balcony, taking out your trash cans once a week, rather than twice, can lead to some constraints. This is the case with Vanessa and her husband who live in a 60-meter apartment with a newborn, on the third floor of a small condominium. The nappies accumulate as the week progresses, the smells too…
On Facebook, she challenged the inhabitants of her town to try to find solutions. “It wasn’tnot to complain but more to see if there were people who had thought of solutions that I would not have possibly thought of“, she explains. Under his publication, there are a hundred comments, but nothing convincing in his case.
“I was offered to switch to washable diapers rather than disposable diapers. This implies an additional workload and it will also increase certain costs. I’ve been told to go once a week to the containers, but hey, that also involves possibly making the trip by car, and I don’t see how it’s more ecological.“.
Bruxelles Propreté is aware of the complications involved, and that it takes some time to adapt, as spokesperson Adel Assouli explains. “Of course, we understand that for some people, in some buildings, it’s a bit more complicated. The meaning of this reform, in particular, is to reduce the number of kilometers traveled by trucks precisely to avoid nuisance. It is also that the bags spend as little time as possible on the street. This is why we have reinstated these collections in the evening. There are a whole host of solutions for food waste. There are neighborhood composts, there are some 200 of them in Brussels, and then there are also many recycling parks“, he concludes.
It is still too early to assess this reform, but according to Bruxelles Propreté, it already seems well integrated. One out of two households has already downloaded the new rubbish collection calendar.
