Drafted 38th overall in the last NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, Matthew Bergeron has had to adapt to a lot of changes since the end of his fourth season at Syracuse University.

Passing through Montreal for the weekend of the Canadian Grand Prix, the offensive lineman from Victoriaville is back from Atlanta where he was taking part in the Falcons’ mini-camp.

“Since my season ended in Syracuse, there have been changes in environments,” explained Bergeron during a 5-7 interview. , return to Victoriaville and leave for Atlanta. I learned to adapt to new environments and I think I adapted well to Atlanta. We’re an amazing team and I’m really looking forward to going to work with them. »

The 23-year-old athlete has already seen that the level of play would be higher in the NFL.

« [La différence], it is the quality of the players, observed Bergeron. You realize that you are no longer the best player on your team. The others are as big and as strong as you and you’re going to have to work to be able to perform with these guys.

“From the first practice, I saw the way guys practice. Every, every, every rep, the guys go for it 100 percent. It’s something I wasn’t used to, at university not everyone does that. But in the NFL, everyone does that because everyone is fighting for a starting job. I think the camp went well and I left a good impression. »

Bergeron will move from tackle to left guard, another change that will require adaptation.

“When you move from outside to inside, I think things happen more quickly. I’ll have to get used to it. In the blocker position, you have more time relative to the defensive player lineup, but as guard the person is lined up above you and there’s barely a yard before things happen. I’ll have to get used to the speed. »

Ten days following signing a four-year contract worth $8.97 million with Atlanta, Bergeron is already thinking regarding meeting expectations over the next four seasons in order to hit the jackpot at the end of his contract.

“When you get drafted you expect a rookie contract and you kinda know what the numbers are going to look like, but when you put your name to paper it’s an awesome feeling. Hoping that in four years it will be something bigger that will illustrate what I will have done in the next four years. »
