MEXICO CITY (AP) — The El Loco or “The Fool” Tarot card is one of new beginnings, detachment and a bit of chaos, which French-Mexican musician Adanowsky delves into on his latest album.

“I fell asleep, did a lucid dream, when you daydream, and suddenly the name ‘The Fool’ came to mind and an image of me dressed in white with a hat and I woke up and said ‘maybe I have to make a record that call it that,’” he said in a recent video call interview regarding his latest album released over the weekend.

“The Fool” has a markedly Anglo side with three songs in English: “When The Angel Comes” with Karen O, vocalist of the Yea Yea Yeahs, with which the album opens; “Chain Reactionary” with Beck and “You Want to Give Up”.

“Karen O’s song was written especially with her in mind, she wrote the lyrics,” Adanowsky said. “’You Want to Give Up’ that is a melody that I had in my head and that I had been jogging for a while. ‘Chain Reactionary’ is a song I wrote for a girl I saw singing on Instagram and I thought it was really good. But she didn’t connect with that song, so I used it for myself and it actually worked for me.”

The collaboration with Beck arose from mutual friends and it flowed like water.

“I am a friend of Sean Lennon and Sean asked him if he knew Beck, I think he had seen a photo in which they were together a while ago and I told him that I wanted to do a song with him, if he might put us in touch and he did so” . Beck accepted the proposal immediately.

“Chain Reactionary” also led to another collaboration for Adanowsky that he had longed for for years when he lived in Los Angeles and was a neighbor of famed music video director Michel Gondry.

“For several years I insisted on him directing a video of one of my songs and he never might, until I sent him this song and he answered me days later saying that he was already starting to film the video,” he recalled. Adanowsky gave Gondry complete creative freedom and the result is a stop-motion video (frame-by-frame animation) in which, through paper cutouts and black and white photographs, Adanowsky and Beck sing to the rhythm of the lyrics that they slide back and forth on the screen.

“Everything was done by hand, it was a titanic job,” he said.

The album, which Adanowsky describes as perfect “to listen to at night”, is dominated by sounds of guitars from the 1960s, with keyboards and synthesizers from the 70s. It was recorded in Mexico, France and the United States.

“It has a 70s vibe, yes, because I recorded everything analogue, on tape, with guitars from the 60s. I think that’s what gives it a rather nostalgic sound, but at the same time there is a modern aspect to the record, I like it. listen to the chalk of the tape that is going around”, he said.

Among the songs, “Todo es perfecto” stands out, in which he talks regarding a self that dies and must forget while facing everything that comes following.

“Everything is precisely in the title, terrible things can happen, deaths, tragedies, but I feel that there is a certain movement of the universe that says that everything is perfect and you must also embrace the darkness, it is necessary to take you to certain places,” he said. .

Adanowsky, whose real name is Adán Jodorowsky, recently went through the death of his brother Cristóbal and his mother Valérie Trumblay -also known as Valérie Jodorowsky- both actors. “I am alive and on my feet,” he said of the difficult moment.

The album includes the song “Grateful” in which he leaves his torments behind and “Ser Yo” in which he offers his essence to God.

“You have to learn to be thankful, sometimes we don’t do it enough, every day you have to say thank you, today I actually didn’t say it. Thank you, ”she said looking at the sky.

He also dedicated the song “Alejandro” to his father, the tarot reader, filmmaker and writer Alejandro Jodorowsky, whom he calls a “dreamer” in the song.

“It is an act of absolute courage to write for your parents, I felt the need to do it, I don’t know why, maybe I wanted to focus on the light more than on the dark and I think that it is also nice to recognize the beauty in your parents ”.

Throughout his career Adanowsky, who has also served as a music producer for multiple artists, has had various pseudonyms and artistic personas such as El Ídolo, Amador and Ada. Resurrecting Adanowsky almost a decade following his emergence makes him look at it from a fresh angle, since he did it in a “more mature, more conscious way.”

At the end of last year, Adanowsky presented his band The Guapos that he integrates together with Leiva, Jay de la Cueva and El David Aguilar. After this they appeared at the Pal Norte festival in Monterrey and hope to tour Spain.

“We are going to put out the first album soon, maybe around June or July, we are preparing another video,” he said. “He’s walking.”
