The Association to Help Crippled Children (Adanil) is a non-governmental organization that, together with the Program Area of the Francisco López Lima Hospital in the city of Roca, works to rehabilitate people with motor and neurological disabilities. Marcia Guevara, the president, and Sara Croza, the vice president, met with Diario RÍO NEGRO and recalled the history of the place 60 years following its birth.

It all started in 1955 with the polio epidemic and A group of interested parties decided to meet and create a rehabilitation center to deal with the consequences of the disease. and mitigate the pain of those affected.

Over time, the idea arose of creating a non-profit society to help those patients who did not have resources. This is how IREL was bornwhich faced the consequences of the epidemic.

“Due to my connection with people who organized the institution, they asked me for help in Roca to obtain financial support”Rina said in a book I write regarding the association and Marcia added that the task was not easy because they were a family that had recently arrived in the city.

On December 9, 1959, a meeting was held where the Adanil commission emerged for the first time, which would begin to operate at Chacabuco 2175.

“It is very difficult to put yourself in Rina’s head at that moment because she came up with something that transcended over the years and that only she might have thought of. How intelligent, what ability and what risk because I didn’t know what response I was going to have.”said Sara.

It was a family job. There were Rina, her husband and her daughters. When they came on vacation too, everyone worked,” the vice president said with a laugh.

“When we had the balloon party to raise funds, several people collaborated. At that time there were no parties in Roca. Adanil filled three trucks with balloons full of helium and we played games, there were food stalls”he recalled.

For me Adanil is my younger sister. We grew up with Adanil. One of my nieces years ago wrote that for her grandmother Adanil she was always just another son.”

Over time Adanil continued to grow stronger. “IREL’s partners became Adanil’s.”

Today the place has a large building which has various sectors: psychology, social work, respiratory rehabilitation, offices, a gym, a multipurpose room, neuropediatric rehabilitation area, audiology and therapy occupational.

Public and private management

“There came a time when Adanil might not sustain all the expenses and we made an agreement with the province,” Marcia explained.

Adanil depended on the Francisco López Lima hospital in the citybut that created an obstacle to the association’s work because they felt that what they did did not receive enough attention from the hospital authorities.

The daily emergencies they had made recovery actions take second place.

Thus, a law was generated that contemplated mixed management, that formalized the participation of the NGO and established that it had its own director who might discuss as equals the allocation of resources from the central level and opening the institution to the community.

“We have our NGO and the health part, which belongs to the Ministry of Health of the Province, which is all the professionals, the administration and the cleaning team since 1998,” explained Marcia and Sara.

Thus the association began to function in a mixed manner between private and public management.

The equipment we have today is state-of-the-art. What the professional asks for as it changes, always changes”, this is thanks to the partners who contribute month following month so that the space is maintained.

There are currently 35 people working there. They make it possible for patients to receive the best care.

The people who come to be treated leave very satisfied with the attention of the professionals., with the kindness and affection with which they serve them. They leave very happy,” said Marcia.

“We have excellent professionals. The patient appreciates how we receive them, how they are treated and how the place is clean and cared for,” Sara added.

And it is true, the place has various rooms, with the best tools and various games for the rehabilitation of the little ones.

Finally, the promoters of the UN expressed what things they wanted for space.““We would like to be able to finish doing several things, one is the special pool for rehabilitation and the pediatric Adanil”said the director.

«Adanil has no comparison»

Paula Calcano is a public employee at Adanil and is part of a team of 35 people who make Adanil stand out for the care they provide to their patients.

The woman told what it was like to work in the space and highlighted the work carried out by the institution.

“We help people with or without social work”he indicated.

“We help people regardless of their economic situation and we are all regarding providing the best care,” he highlighted.

Over the years, the woman trained and today is a specialist in pediatric care.

“For me Adanil is a center without comparison. In Roca there is nothing on a pathological level like this place”he expressed.

“We do everything and we have top-notch facilities and equipment.”he noted and added “without this work, many people who do not have resources would have to go to the private system and it is often impossible.”

Regarding his work and that of his colleagues, he noted that they work without the pressure of caring for hundreds of patients every day, which allows them to focus on the recovery and rehabilitation of patients.

“The goal is to provide the best possible care and not focus on statistics”ended the
