Adan Augusto denies “tie” for the majority in the Senate

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— The next leader of Morena in the Senate, Adán Augusto López, denied that he already has the three votes he needs for the 4T to reach a qualified majority in the Upper House “tied up,” as assured by the coordinator of the Green Party senators, Manuel Velasco.

Interviewed after registering as a new senator of the Republic, the former Secretary of the Interior stated that he is working on building a qualified majority, but ruled out that Morena will “buy” votes from the opposition to do so.

“I say this with all due respect to my fellow senators who have issued a statement. First, in all parliaments around the world, attempts are always made to build majorities, alliances are made, political agreements are made and this results, as I was saying, in legislative majorities, simple majorities, qualified majorities where required.”

“It should not be surprising then that the parliamentary groups in the Senate are trying to build alliances or legislative agreements,” he said.

“Are you going to buy votes?” he was asked.

“Never, no; the whole buying of votes was a thing of the past. Remember the old regime, the PRI and the PAN. Remember how the so-called energy reform and the educational reform were approved. We act differently. We are people of conviction and principles,” the Morena member responded.

“We act differently; the trajectory of those of us who are members of Morena is that of building consensus, which is why sometimes votes have been lost, such as the one on electoral reform in recent years. It was not possible to build it on that occasion, so now we are going to try to build a qualified majority,” he said.

Manuel Velasco said on Monday that Morena and its allies have secured 99.9% of the three votes they need in the Senate of the Republic to achieve a qualified majority.
