The British Adam Yates won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (WorldTour), run on Sunday over 221.4 kilometers in Canada. After eighteen laps of the 12.2 kilometer loop, he won in a two-man sprint ahead of Frenchman Pavel Sivakov (INEOS Grenadiers). The Spaniard Alex Aranburu (Movistar) took 3rd place. The tiring edition was marked by rain, which fell during a good part of the race. The eighteen climbs of the Côte Camilien-Houde (1.8 km at 7.2%) and minor climbs of the circuit compiled more than 4700 meters of elevation gain.
Arnaud De Liewinner Friday in Quebec, tried his luck 40 kilometers from the finish before being caught shortly following.
One of his teammates, Florian Vermeersch, led the way from the start of the race by starting alone. He had a lead of up to 5 minutes before being chased by the peloton and caught following 150 kilometers of effort.
Adam Yates and Pavel Sivakov escaped from a group reduced to a dozen runners, 10 kilometers from the finish. The two riders opened a gap of 10 to 15 seconds, enough to compete for victory together, and Yates dominated Sivakov in the sprint to take the 23rd victory of his career, the 5th this season.
On the list, Yates succeeds the Slovenian Tadej Pogacarwinner in 2022, and Greg Van Avermaet, 2021 (and 2016) winner. Before the race, ‘GVA’ was honored by the organizers and given a hockey jersey for the nine podiums and two victories he achieved during his career at the two Canadian classics, Quebec and Montreal.
