American actress Shelley Duvall has died at the age of 75. She appeared in dozens of feature films, often playing somewhat distant, eccentric women. Duvall died at home in Texas in her sleep from complications of diabetes, her husband announced.

“My beloved, sweet, beautiful life partner and friend has left us,” said husband Dan Gilroy, with whom she had been since 1989. “She has suffered too much in recent times, now she is free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”

Duvall is known for her role in the psychological horror film The ShiningStanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic. In it, she plays Wendy Torrance, who, together with her husband Jack, played by Jack Nicholson, looks following a remote and completely deserted hotel. Nicholson slowly loses his mind in the film and turns on his wife and son.

A memorable scene from the film is when Jack goes following Wendy with an axe. She locks herself in the bathroom and Jack then tries to force her way in.

Duvall later said the filming was traumatic for her. In an interview In a 1981 interview with People magazine, she said that director Kubrick made her cry 12 hours a day for weeks. “I would never do that much for a role once more,” she said at the time. “If you want to suffer pain and call it art, go ahead, but not with me.”

In 2021, she reflected on that time in The Hollywood Reporter. To get into character, she would listen to sad songs or think regarding a bad event in her life. “But following a while, your body starts to defend itself. It says, ‘Stop doing that to yourself. I don’t want to cry every day.'”

She said it was tough to wake up early in the morning knowing that you have to cry all day because that was planned for the shoot. “I don’t know how I ever did that.” She said she had to do a traumatic scene 175 times before it was approved.

Duvall was discovered by director Robert Altman and appeared in several of his films, including NashvilleShe also had a supporting role in the 1977 film Annie Halldirected by Woody Allen.

Another of Duvall’s well-known roles was in Popeye from 1980. She played the iconic character Olive Oyl alongside lead actor Robin Williams.

Depressed

Since the 90s, she has been out of the spotlight for many years. In 2016, she appeared on a broadcast of television psychiatrist Dr. Phil. In it, she said that she had been struggling with depressive symptoms for a long time.

Her first role in over twenty years was in 2022, when she briefly appeared in the horror film The Forest Hills by director Scott Goldberg.

Duvall was born on July 7, 1949 in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the eldest of four children. She initially studied science and was interested in nutrition. At the age of 20, she was approached for a role in a film.

She initially declined. But because she was approached time and once more to do a screen test, she finally gave in. “Maybe I am an actress,” she said at the time.
