The actress was questioned following posting messages in her Instagram stories where she showed her support for Palestine in the midst of the war between Israel and Hamas.
Scream 7 has just lost its leading actress. Melissa Barrera, who plays heroine Sam Carpenter in the fifth and sixth installments of Scream, has just been fired by Spyglass Media, the production company in charge of the horror franchise.
At issue: messages published by the Mexican actress on Instagram where she showed her support for Palestine at the beginning of the month. “I too come from a colonized country,” she wrote. “Palestine will be liberated.”
In another message, the actress denounced “censorship” on social networks, notably accusing Instagram of only showing her articles favorable to Israel. “Censorship is real,” she declared, before adding:
“The Western media only shows (part of the reality). Why do they do this? I’ll let you guess. (…) The Palestinians know this very well. They know that the world has been trying to make them invisible for decades.”
“It wasn’t my decision”
According to American media, this statement would have been the origin of his dismissal from Scream 7, which was to begin filming soon. “We have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism,” Spyglass Media said in a statement.
“(We also do not tolerate) incitement to hatred in any form, including lies regarding genocide, ethnic cleansing or the Shoah – anything that resembles speech in any way of hatred”, adds the text.
Christopher Landon, director of Scream 7, reacted emotionally to the news on X (ex-Twitter) in a now-deleted message: “Everything sucks. Stop (yelling at me). It wasn’t my decision.”
Spyglass Media has not yet revealed the casting for this seventh in the franchise. The scenario will require adjustments to justify the disappearance of its heroine Sam. Her sister, Tara, played by Jenna Ortega, the new darling of Hollywood, should be put at the forefront of the next film.
