Oscar-nominated actress Gena Rowlands is dead at the age of 94. That is confirmed by Variety.

Rowlands gained attention and was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Mabel in the drama “A woman under the influence” (1974), directed by her husband John Cassavetes. A second Oscar nomination came for “Gloria” (1980). Rowlands and Cassavetes made a total of ten independent films together.

One of her most famous film roles in recent years is the romantic “The Diary” (2004), directed by her son Nick Cassavetes.

Rowlands has been acting in film and television since the 1950s and has more than 100 roles under her belt, four of which have been awarded Emmys. She retired in 2015.

For the past five years, she has suffered from Alzheimer’s and dementia, which mirrors what her character Allie went through in “The Diary”.
