ACTRESS Cate Blanchett will return to the stage for the first time in six years, playing a role in Anton Chekhov’s play, “The Seagull.”
The Oscar winner will play Arkadina in the new adaptation, which will also star “Strike” actor Tom Burke.
The show will run at London’s Barbican Theatre for six weeks starting in February. Director Thomas Ostermeier describes Blanchett as a “once-in-a-lifetime actress.”
The new adaptation will mark a reunion between Blanchett and Burke, who recently wrapped filming on Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming film, “Black Bag.”
Ostermeier told BBC News, “I have known and admired Cate for many years, and seeing her on stage has always been an honour. I am thrilled that we will be making our first artistic collaboration with the Barbican’s production of ‘The Seagull’, and that London will experience the presence of this once-in-a-lifetime actress in one of theatre’s greatest roles, Arkadina.”
Blanchett last appeared on the Barbican stage in 2012 in the play “Big and Small (Gross und Klein).” However, her last overall theatre role was before the Covid-19 pandemic, in a 2019 production of “When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other” at the National Theatre.
Blanchett has had a long and varied film career, with credits including “Carol,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Tar,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Notes on a Scandal,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” and “Ocean’s 8.”
He has been nominated for eight acting Oscars, winning two for “The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine.” Burke has appeared in the films “The Wonder,” “Living,” “The Souvenir,” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” as well as the BBC series “Strike.” (BBC/Z-3)
