(CNN) — Los Angeles city firefighters found actor Matthew Perry “unconscious in an individual hot tub” when they received the emergency call to go to his home on Saturday.
“A passerby pulled the man’s head out of the water and carried him to the edge, then firefighters pulled him out of the water upon arrival,” the department said in a statement to CNN on Monday when asked regarding the incident at the address. Perry. “Sadly, a quick medical assessment revealed that the man had passed away before first responders arrived.”
The circumstances surrounding Perry’s death are being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County medical examiner, the city’s fire department said.
He was 54 years old.
An autopsy was performed, but examiners are awaiting the results of toxicology reports to determine Perry’s cause of death, the medical examiner’s office told CNN on Sunday. These reports can take weeks to complete.
Investigators plan to use toxicology reports to determine whether any foreign substances may have contributed to Perry’s death, according to a law enforcement source.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told CNN that a 911 call came in on Saturday at 4:07 p.m. for a water rescue emergency. The Los Angeles Police Department responded at 4:10 p.m. and shortly therefollowing characterized the call as a death investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division is investigating Perry’s death, but a law enforcement source told CNN that no foul play is suspected.
