Manuel Tadros had the chance to share a scene with Joaquin Phoenix in the film Beau is scared, third feature film by American filmmaker Ari Aster, which was shot in Montreal in the summer of 2021.
“I was very proud to shoot with him because he is an actor that I admire a lot, confided yesterday to the Journal Manuel Tadros, a few hours before the Montreal premiere of the film, at the Imperial Cinema.
“It’s funny because shortly before, I had directed the dubbing set of Joker [film pour lequel Phoenix a remporté l’Oscar du meilleur acteur, NDLR]. So I had developed a kind of virtual relationship with him by dint of observing his work. »
Third feature film by American director Ari Aster (Heredity, Midsommar), handsome is scared (Beau is Afraid) was entirely shot in Montreal during the summer of 2021. To defend on screen the role of a convenience store owner who welcomes the central character of the film (Phoenix) into his business, Manuel Tadros spent two days on set of this Hollywood production with a budget of US$35 million (approximately CAN$47 million).
“When I arrived on the set, I flipped over,” he says. There was a whole section of rue Sainte-Catherine that had been closed to recreate the post-apocalyptic universe of the film. There was a burned car, and a body on the street. And they had completely revamped the fronts of the houses. The art direction was amazing. It was so beautiful it was ugly! »

In handsome is scared, Joaquin Phoenix slips into the skin of a paranoid man who embarks on “an epic odyssey” to find his mother. By rubbing shoulders with him for two days on the set of the film, Manuel Tadros had the opportunity to exchange a little with him.
“The first day, I didn’t want to annoy him and I said almost nothing to him,” he says. He was extremely demanding in everything he did. But on the second day, when he found out I spoke Spanish, he became extremely brotherly and warm with me. He speaks Spanish because he has already lived in Mexico. We chatted a little in Spanish and at the end of the day, he told me that he had enjoyed playing with me. »
It was not the first time that Manuel Tadros starred in a big Hollywood production. The actor notably defended a small role in X-Men: Apocalypse few years ago. “I also acted in a film [Taking Lives] in 2002 for three days with Angelina Jolie, but I was cut during the editing,” he laughs.
Manuel Tadros is currently filming the next season of the series Les moments parfaits, which will be broadcast next fall on TVA.
