[스포츠조선 고재완 기자] Actor Kang Ji-hwan freed himself from the lawsuit that had bound him for so long and laid the foundation for resuming his activities.

On November 29 last year, the 14th Civil Affairs Division of the Seoul Central District Court ruled that Kang Ji-hwan’s former agency would dismiss all claims in a lawsuit seeking 4.2 billion won in damages filed once morest him. Subsequently, the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court also ruled on December 22 last year to ‘cancel the decision to temporarily seize’ Kang Ji-hwan’s real estate, which was provisionally seized at the request of his former agency.

The Seongnam Branch ruled, “Considering the materials and arguments submitted to date in this case, it is difficult to believe that the result of the above-mentioned lawsuit will be canceled or changed in the appeal trial.” This means that the dismissal of the lawsuit claiming 4.3 billion won in damages is unlikely to change in the appeal trial.

Meanwhile, Kang Ji-hwan was indicted on charges of quasi-forcible molestation in 2019, and following going through the third trial, he was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation. Accordingly, the drama production company filed a lawsuit once morest Kang Ji-hwan and his former agency to return 6.3 billion won worth of unjust enrichment, and the former agency once more filed a lawsuit once morest Kang Ji-hwan for default damages of 4.2 billion won.

The Supreme Court did not accept Kang Ji-hwan’s claim, but ahead of the Supreme Court ruling, CCTV footage of the scene on the day of the incident and the victims’ SNS conversations were released, sparking sympathy for Kang Ji-hwan. Accordingly, a petition was posted on the Blue House National Petition website saying, ‘Please make the Kang Ji-hwan Act (a strong punishment law for false accusations).’ However, the Supreme Court did not accept the new circumstantial evidence and confirmed the second trial ruling.
