Strauss Zelnick is the head of publisher Take-Two Interactive, which notably publishes Rockstar Games games (Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption) and has been speaking out a lot lately. After commenting on the upcoming financial year and giving some clues regarding the potential arrival of GTA 6, the CEO once once more supported the merger between Activision and Microsoft.

“I think it’s important never to confuse a distribution technology with a business model”

The case of the takeover of Activision Blizzard King by Microsoft has shaken the video game industry for several months now. Recently, the disapproval of the British organization, the CMA, has caused a lot of ink to flow and led to various reactions from several players involved in the publishing or development of video games. Among them, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive who provides strong support.

In recent interview given to our American colleagues from the IGN site, the CEO of one of the most important game publishing companies once once more spoke out in favor of the merger of the two entities, Microsoft and Activision, echoing his first intervention October 2022 release.

Reacting directly to the recent refusal of the British antitrust body, but also to the most recent green light from the European Commission, Strauss Zelnick indicated that “what is good for [Activion et Microsoft] is good for the industry. Well beyond the competitive eye he might have, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive sees above all an opportunity for his company to develop in the mobile market.

I would like to believe that streaming our titles would massively expand the market. I’m not sure there’s a reason not to believe it

Strauss Zelnick seems to see this potential merger as a way to sign a lasting agreement, allowing titles such as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 to be broadcast via Microsoft’s cloud gaming services. The latter had even briefly integrated the Xbox Game Pass catalog for a first partnership experience. The CEO of Take-Two Interactive also wishes to recall that he does not see cloud gaming as a market in its own right, but as a technology that can be deployed anywhere, or almost.

I think it’s important never to confuse a delivery technology with a business model

Terms heavy with meaning, insofar as the CMA had estimated that Microsoft enjoyed too important a position in the field, to justify not validating the takeover of Activision. Strauss Zelnick’s words therefore sound as much like a strong support for Microsoft in their takeover venture as a call to develop its franchises on more platforms.
