The European Institute of Health and Social Welfare, chaired by Dr. Manuel de la Peña, turns the presentation of the book ‘Active old age’, held on May 4, into an alliance of feelings to help older people create their project vital, to reinvent themselves to live actively and with the highest quality of life
Ignacio Buqueras y Bach, businessman and academic, has coordinated this admirable book, getting a cast of 18 renowned personalities to write a chapter and 24 popes They will contribute their testimonials on the essential aspects for an active old age.
Buqueras stressed that “in Spain there are more than three million people over 80 years of age, retirement opens a life expectancy of thirty or forty years. The risk of loneliness must be avoided, adopting routines, healthy styles and actively participating in recreational activities “.
He doctor Manuel de la Pena, academic and professor of cardiology, reflected on the importance of a healthy diet with organic products and the practice of daily physical exercise. In addition, he recommended dance schools as a place for socialization and physical and mental maintenance. De la Peña stressed that many older people are wrongly labeled with Alzheimer’s, when in fact they have poor circulation problems due to micro-infarcts, which can be avoided by controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol. “It is very useful to follow this book to the letter, using it as a true tutorial, since wise advice is reflected”, he points out.
In the prologue, two eminent psychiatrists, such as Dr. Enrique Rojas and Dr. Marian Rojas-Estapé, affirm that happiness consists in having health and a bad memory. Being able to forget the negative things of the past is mental health. “One gets old when he changes his dreams for his memories. You have to live with projects, something to fight for and something to aspire to.”
José Manuel Canales, professor of Political Sciences, considers that a “key aspect is the government of emotions” and Ángel Lafuente, president of the Institute of Verbal Techniques, highlights “the importance of recovering dialogue. Dialogue requires courage and involves exchanging ideas with a aptitude open to the discovery of a more outlined truth”.
The renowned jurist Antonio Garrigues Walker considers “the right not to be deceived and the importance of the truth to be of singular relevance, given the increase in the empire of lies in society”. Garrigues emphasizes that “elderly people should not stop doing things, especially intellectual things, that make them think and keep their brains active”.
In the urban sphere, the architect Carlos Lamela points out that “the recipe will always be the same: safety and comfort, and transmitting tranquility and calm to the elderly”.
Father Ángel, founder of Messengers of Peace, is in favor of “keeping unwanted loneliness at bay” and for this he launched the initiative “The Golden Telephone” to take care of the emotional health of people at risk of loneliness, and the results are frankly satisfactory.
Likewise, Gregorio Marañón, president of the Teatro Real, considers that “the sense of social solidarity should always prevail”, which he practices. And, on the other hand, for Ambassador Raimundo Bassols “active old age is not a sacrifice, it is a free vocation”.
Federico Mayor Zaragoza, president of the Fundación Cultura de la Paz, stresses that “conserving the ethical heritage is of great importance, since the values that we leave to future generations will be the reference points for reshaping the future every day.”
Rafael Anson, founder of the Royal Academy of Gastronomy, points out that the key to successfully overcoming 80 years is “not to lose hope”, is to continue having “dreams, illusions and projects” and “not looking to the past, but to the future, trying to project himself into new activities, walk eight thousand steps a day and of course eat well”. And, for this reason, the kitchen and the cooks are important.
Laura Rojas-Marcos, a doctor in clinical psychology, points out that “people who have learned to take care of their health are happier, suffering fewer illnesses and having a better quality of life. Those who take care of their diet, carry out physical exercise, maintain good oral health, avoid substance abuse and consume medications correctly, live longer and better”. People who focus on their present show a higher level of health and well-being than those who focus on the past.
In short, it is a book that collects wise stories to keep us active and that has the support of the European Institute of Health and Social Welfare, an institution that is leading a current of opinion on longevity.
