Active Aging Movement: Empowering Older Adults for Health and Well-being

Madrid (EFE).- The ‘Old age, vital’ movement, made up of more than 6.5 million older people, scientific and professional societies and the media, claims to be an active part of the decisions regarding their health and well-being and urges administrations to “promote” equitable prevention policies.

They have demanded it in the presentation to the media of this movement to which two thirds of the 9.5 million people over 65 years of age who currently exist in Spain have joined.

“The movement is for, for and with older people, who are the protagonists of our lives and we have to be an active part of political decisions and our health and well-being,” stressed the president of the Spanish Confederation of Seniors’ Organizations ( CEOMA) and spokesperson for the initiative, Sabina Camacho.

More years but no less rights

“Just because we are older we do not lose rights,” exclaimed Camacho, who explained that the movement wants to promote active and healthy aging and promote equitable active prevention policies in the different autonomous communities.

To this end, they have already met with Andalusia, Galicia, Castilla y León and have requested meetings with the Basque Country, Navarra, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Catalonia and Madrid.

The objective is that in “3 simple steps” the communities “get moving” for the health of older people within a period of 6 months, for which they urge them to sign a collaboration agreement that includes the commitment to work together and promote health prevention measures that facilitate active and healthy aging.

Likewise, they demand that public-private collaboration work groups be activated where the Administration, older people, and representatives of different organizations participate, as well as that communication campaigns be launched in each region on healthy and balanced eating, physical exercise and vaccination. .

“Let them worry regarding us”

For her part, the president of the Democratic Union of Pensioners and Retirees of Spain (UDP), Inmaculada Ruiz, has denounced the multitude of barriers that older people encounter and has asked for the collaboration of the entire society.

“They should worry regarding us because every day we are more isolated and more forgotten, there is hardly any talk regarding the elderly in any area, it is a group that needs to be extinguished, but I am not going to allow it and we have to work, fight and fight,” he stated. .

In addition to CEOMA and the UDP, the Platform for Seniors and Pensioners (PMP), the Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities (Cermi), ONCE, the Pilares Foundation, the Age&Life Foundation, the National Confederation of Retirees are part of this movement. and Pensioners of Spain (Conjupes) and the Association 60 and much more.

Also participating are scientific societies such as the Spanish Association of Vaccinology (AEV), the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SEGG), the General Council of Official Colleges of Pharmacists (CGCOF), among others, as well as employers’ associations in the sector and various media. communication.
