Activated Charcoal: Why You’ve Been Using It Wrong Your Whole Life

Use not in tablets

Activated charcoal is truly a folk medicine. It is available at home in people who are used to managing minor health problems on their own and in those who always rely on the instructions of doctors. It is used for poisoning with substances and products, gas intoxication, dirty water and poisons, food allergies, certain diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and flatulence. The drug instructions usually say that the dosage should be used – 1 tablet per 10 kg of a person’s weight. But recently the situation has changed and more and more often a more optimal way to use this medicine is indicated in the insert.

Now, activated charcoal is recommended to be used with respect to the dosage in the same way, but not in the form of tablets, but as an aqueous suspension, for which the drug is pre-crushed and diluted with a small amount of water at room temperature. That is, activated charcoal powder dissolved in water is more effective and starts its action faster, which is confirmed by the Association of Clinical Pharmacologists. They also warn that the time of taking the drug should be 1-2 hours before or following meals, as well as the use of other medicines, including vitamins.
