2023-07-15 08:10:22

The country’s most popular tourist attraction, the Acropolis in Athens, was temporarily closed during the hottest midday period as a heat wave gripped Greece. Authorities said there was a good chance it would close again tomorrow. Some tourists expressed their frustration at the closed entrance, saying the official website did not provide enough information.

Greece’s Culture Minister Lina Mendoni told state television ERT that the “Acropolis” in Athens was shut down between noon and 5 p.m. local time “to protect workers and tourists.” Sites designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO will be temporarily closed.

“Tomorrow we will most likely take the same measures,” Mandoni said.

The national meteorological agency EMY said the temperature in Athens reached 39 degrees Celsius today and parts of Greece could see as high as 44 degrees Celsius tomorrow.

The location of the Acropolis and other popular tourist attractions around the “Sacred Rock”, such as the Ancient Agora, remain open. In recent months, the number of tourists visiting the Acropolis, which is usually open from 8 am to 8 pm daily, has increased significantly.
