In recent years, video game news has been punctuated by numerous takeovers. If we obviously think of Microsoft which recently bought Activision-Blizzard and before that Bethesda-Zenimax in 2020, other studios are regularly cited when it comes to imagining the next potential candidate for a future takeover. CD Projekt RED is one of them, and the subject was discussed during a recent interview with Adam Kiciński, the current CEO of the studio.
CD Projekt RED loves its independence
In an article recently published in the columns of the Polish site parquetAdam Kiciński was first asked if the company planned to make acquisitions.
While CD Projekt RED is working on several games and has called on third-party partners for certain projects, he confirmed that the company does not intend to buy any studios at the moment, and that it is not interested in ” purchases which would only aim to include the acquired companies in our group and to consolidate their financial results”:
We are not planning any acquisitions at this time. Of course, we are open to ideas that might accelerate the implementation of our strategy. But we are not interested in purchases that would only aim to include the acquired companies in our group and consolidate their financial results. We don’t see the value in it.
Regarding a future takeover of CD Projekt RED by a larger entity, the answer is clear, the studio does not wish to be “incorporated into a larger entity” and attaches great importance to independence:
We do not wish to be incorporated into a larger entity. We have worked our whole lives to reach our current position. We believe that in a few years we will be even bigger and stronger. We have ambitious plans and we are passionate regarding what we do. We attach great importance to independence.
These statements should certainly put an end to the takeover rumors which regularly circulate on the web regarding the company. Last May, Ola Sondej, PR at CD Projekt, had to deny rumors of a takeover of CD Projekt by Sony.
Many games in development
As a reminder, CD Projekt RED is very busy since it is currently working on Project Orionthe sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, a new installment in The Witcher franchise (Project Polaris), as well as a brand new IP known as Hadar.
A remake of the first The Witcher is also in preparation and is being developed by the Fool’s Theory studio, while Project Sirius, a new game in the Witcher universe with multiplayer, is in development by the American studio The Molasses Flood.
The future therefore seems set for CD Projekt RED and its partners who already have plenty to do for the coming years, and we obviously look forward to learning more regarding these future projects.
