Determined to claim to the end their chances of feeling vindicated, they are in the Shareholders’ Association of Achaiki Bank. As it became known the day before yesterday, a first group of 40 shareholders, through their lawyer, Patras lawyer Vassilis Markos, filed a lawsuit in the Single-Member Court of First Instance of Athens, basically requesting compensation from the Bank’s management and executives, as they consider them to be the main ones responsible for the mismanagement.
“P” contacted Mr. Markos to give an insight into the rationale behind this action, what is the climate among the shareholders, why this time was chosen to file the class action and also why in Athens.
“I see a great willingness to participate. I would expect these people to be disappointed because it has been so many years and they have lost so much. However, I have been impressed that fellow citizens who had many shares are participating in the process, as well as others who had 50. This shows that the world is looking for justice and expects from it” emphasizes Mr. Markou initially and continues:
“In fact, this is not the beginning of our efforts. For three months now, we have filed an application for injunctive measures requesting the freezing of the assets of some of the key officials. In fact, the case was supposed to be discussed the day before yesterday, but we got a postponement and the discussion was rescheduled for November.”
One of the points of the announcement of the Association of Shareholders of Achaiki Bank that caused a question, was why they chose the Single Member Court of First Instance of Athens. Mr. Markou answers: “One of the defendants is based in Athens and we consider that he has a substantial participation in the financial part of the case. In addition, Athens is the capital of the country and with our choice we want to show the importance of the whole case of Achaia”.
Finally, the shareholder advocate who filed the relevant lawsuit the day before yesterday spoke to “P” about the climate prevailing among the shareholder ranks. “The shareholders, with the common sense of justice that a citizen has, consider it self-evident to compensate the main responsible as we consider them. But I explain to them that things are not simple for several reasons. They have high expectations but we want to keep them grounded. We explain to them the difficulties we have to face.”
We remind you that a new class action is expected to be filed in the near future, as other shareholders have been notified of the Association’s actions. It is estimated that more than 150 fellow citizens who continue to assert their interests and seek justice will take part in the entire process.
