Accused of trying to sell fake Modigliani paintings claims they are ‘authentic’

A man – a Dutch citizen who studied history and art and has been dedicating himself to art for more than 35 years purchase and sale of works “without any prior problem”—, who faces three years in prison accused of trying to sell four paintings of Amedeo Modigliani through an art gallery in Valencia that turned out to be reproductions by imitation of authentic works not attributable to the painter, he assured yesterday in the trial that the works are “absolutely authentic”.

The Public Prosecutor requests for him a three-year prison sentence for a crime of attempted fraud and a fine of 2,700 euros.

The events occurred in November 2019 when the defendant deposited in a valencian gallery four paintings supposedly made by Modigliani for auction and sale “knowing that they were not authentic” and to give the appearance of authenticity he accompanied them with some photocopied certificates supposedly signed by the now deceased expert Arthur Pfannstiereports and catalogs.

However, according to the public ministry, two expert reports conclude that the four paintings are a reproduction by imitation of the authentic ones not attributable to Modigliani.
