According to the New York Times, Beckham would have placed very strict conditions on his interventions and seems to avoid questions on certain aspects such as Qatari laws prohibiting homosexuality.
In response to the article, his spokesperson issued a statement saying that “David has been involved in several World Cups and other international tournaments, both as a player and as an ambassador and he has always believed that the sport has the power to be a force for good in the world”.
“We understand that there are different and strongly held opinions regarding the hosting (of the World Cup) in the Middle East but consider it positive that the debate on key issues has been stimulated by the first World Cup organized in the region”, we continue from the same source.

David Beckham, now 47, was reportedly paid $180 million over a ten-year period to act for the promotion of Qatar, but others report a sum of $180 million. $15 million per year over three years with an option to extend the agreement.
The player played in the FIFA World Cups in 1998, 2002 and 2006 with the England team.
