Accused of blasphemy escapes in Chichawatani, search continues: Police

According to the police, the incident took place when an ASI of a police station in Chichawatani, while on duty a few days ago, while checking Facebook on his mobile phone, suddenly saw an account containing ‘obscene content’.

After which the police officer Shamsur Rehman Sabri first took screenshots of this material and kept them with him and later handed over these screenshots to the police.

According to Faisal Shahzad, District Police Officer (DPO) of Sahiwal district, a case has been registered against the Facebook account holder under the blasphemy clause (295C) of the Pakistan Penal Code at Chichawatani police station Sadar.

He told Independent Urdu that ‘the accused is absconding but his family has been moved to a safe place against their will as the residents of the area are angry in this regard.’

DPO Sahiwal hoped that the accused would be arrested in the next few hours.

DPO Faisal Shahzad said that ‘the said Facebook account has been used, so it is likely that the accused has been using it and he posted obscene content on it.’

According to him: ‘Another possibility in this incident could be the creation of a fake account in the name of the accused. While the third possibility is that the account of the accused has been hacked.

However, the DPO said that the police are investigating the first possibility as it is an old Facebook account, which has friends and relatives of the accused.

“Now when the accused comes into our hands, then we will further investigate whether he did this act himself or not.” His gadget (mobile phone) will also be helpful in this.’

Faisal Shahzad said that ‘after the arrest of the accused, the relevant agencies will also be involved in the investigation.’

He said that ‘the atmosphere in the area is now under control and the local peace committee members are helping to improve the situation very sensibly.’

DPO Sahiwal Faisal Shahzad said that seven cases of blasphemy were registered in Sahiwal during the current year, which shows an increase in the registration of such cases.

He said that ‘I think there is a need to establish a national consensus on this. Scholars should sit down and tell their followers to think before writing anything on social media.

“We must nationally discourage students and youth from engaging in ignorant debates on social media.”
