Accuracy, the issue that concerns citizens

Table of Contents

Accuracy has been the main concern of citizens in the country lately, as shown in a poll by the METRON ANALYSIS app shown at the event of the Alexis Tsipras Institute.

In fact, it is perceived no longer as an “imported” problem but as a structural issue, which increases the feeling of material and psychological precariousness in an era of overlapping crises.

THE WHOLE POLL

The term accuracy summarizes multiple aspects of financial life, related to the perceived increase in the cost of living: basic goods, energy, housing, but also health, education, recreation.

It also involves a strong time dimension, from everyday expenses to regular expenses on a monthly basis, depending on the financial comfort or difficulty of an individual or a household as the month passes.

Furthermore, it affects the sense of the horizon of citizens’ expectations as well as the policy options they would prefer.

Also, according to the same poll, the trend of increasing pessimism about the country’s path is well established, and today 3 out of 4 think it is going in the wrong direction.

The horizon of economic expectations is narrowing, as more than 2 in 3 estimate that their consumption possibilities have worsened.

For most, it’s the day-to-day expenses that weigh more than the monthly bills.

Among the expenses of everyday life, the most burdensome are the most inflexible (supermarket, transportation, medical expenses), while those related to entertainment and recreation are less so.

In regular/monthly expenses, electricity is clearly the most burdensome expense. Along with telephony and water, they are regular costs that concern almost the entire population horizontally.

Considering only those affected by each expense, the electricity bill remains the most important burden, followed by private education and housing expenses (rent, mortgage).

In the immediate future, the perspective is basically to limit expenses (clothing/shoes, supermarkets, heating/cooling, entertainment, holidays) or maintaining them at least at the same levels (transportation, health, education, housing).

In this climate, most report either barely making ends meet or running out of money before the month is out.

Finally, expectations for the future remain low and pessimism prevails, with almost 2 in 3 estimating that the rise in inflation will not stop here.

In conclusion, consumption possibilities are considered to have deteriorated, and in a number of basic expenditures the tendency is to limit or even contain them. For the vast majority, the balance of income and expenditure is marginal during the month.

Therefore, and at the level of public policy, some points emerge that are worth keeping in mind:

– Pessimism remains dominant at the level of consumption as well, exacerbating the feeling of a horizon of low expectations for the country as a whole, at a critical turning point for the economy and for the political system

– In the field of precision, it seems that intervention is required primarily at the national level – since the problem is considered intrinsic and not “imported” – and additionally at the EU level.

-Share of responsibility is assigned to the market, without expectations of its self-regulation nor of an organized consumer movement in civil society
