Accuracy: 2.22% appreciation in food prices in July

In particular, he cited data from Eurostat, based on which food inflation in Greece was set at 1% in June 2024, when in the E.U. it was 1.3% and to 1.2%, against 1.3% in the EU, a month later.

In addition, cumulative food inflation in the period December 2021 – July 2024 was 25.8% in Greece, while in the E.U. was 26.1%.

“Food prices fell below the European average. In fact, if we remove the disproportionately large effect of olive oil on the food price index in our country, the food price index is now moving downwards”, underlined the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his introductory statement to the Council of Ministers.

Mr. Theodorikakos also presented data from EL.STAT., which recorded food inflation of 2.22% for July in our country. The increase in olive oil prices in the period July 2023 – July 2024 reached 56.7%. Development that had an overall effect on food inflation at a rate of 2.26%. The remarkable thing is that food inflation, without the effect of olive oil, was -0.04%.

Changes

According to EL.STAT. (July 2024) the categories of goods with the largest increase, on an annual basis, include the following: 1) olive oil: 56.7%, 2) chocolate: 17.0%, 3) fruit juices: 15.5%, 4) tea – chamomile: 11.1%, 5) fresh fish: 8.4%, 6) breakfast cereals: 7.4%, 7) fresh seafood: 6.6%, 8) lamb/goat: 6.2% , 9) fresh vegetables: 3.5%, 10) honey: 3.2% and 11) beef: 2.8%.

Accordingly, the categories of goods with the largest decrease on an annual basis include the following: 1) sugar: -18.9%, 2) fresh fruit: -9.1%, 3) flour: -9%, 4) seed oils: – 8.5%, 5) evaporated milk: -8.5%, 6) frozen seafood: -6.7%, 7) potatoes: -6.1%, 8) frozen fish: -2.8%, 9) milk: -2.4% and 10) frozen vegetables: -2.4%.

Measures for restraint of prices

In the context of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Theodorikakos also presented a series of initiatives taken by the Ministry of Development to deal with punctuality. These include:

* The extension of the provision on the ceiling on the gross profit margin until 31.12.2024. At the same time, as of June 2024, the maximum fine limit for the violation of this provision has been increased fivefold and now stands at 5 million euros.

* The prohibition of discounts and offers when there has been a previous revaluation of the product, with the relevant fine now reaching up to 6 million euros (tripling in June 2024). And this measure was extended until the end of the year.

* The strengthening of the control mechanisms by increasing the control staff of DIMEA (30 people), the strengthening of the Competition Commission in personnel and the activation of the control mechanisms of the regions of the country.

* Increasing market research opportunities for consumers through digital tools such as the e-katanalotis platform and the “household basket”.

* The elaboration of further structural measures to remove regulatory barriers to competition in wholesale and retail trade.
