Since the terrorist attacks by the Islamist Hamas a good two weeks ago, 2,360 children have died in Israel’s counterattacks in the Gaza Strip, according to the UN Children’s Fund. 5,364 others were injured, UNICEF said Wednesday morning, citing reports without naming the sources. UNICEF spoke of “relentless attacks”.
There had previously been a scandal in the UN Security Council because of a statement critical of Israel by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Guterres once once more strongly condemned Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel, but criticized Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and spoke of “clear violations of international humanitarian law.” Israeli UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan then called on Guterres to resign.
Terrorists on behalf of Hamas, which rules in the Gaza Strip, carried out a massacre of civilians in Israel on October 7th. More than 1,400 people died during and in the following days. According to the Israeli army, at least 222 other people were forcibly taken into the Gaza Strip. Four hostages have now been released. Since the surprise Hamas attacks, Israel’s army has been bombing targets in the Gaza Strip and preparing a ground offensive in the sealed-off coastal area.
Adele Khodr, UNICEF regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, said: “The killing and maiming of children, the abduction of children, the attacks on hospitals and schools, and the denial of humanitarian access constitute serious violations of children’s rights.” UNICEF strongly appeals to all parties to agree to a ceasefire, allow humanitarian access and release all hostages. The entire population of the Gaza Strip – nearly 2.3 million people – is suffering from acute water shortages, which has serious consequences for children, who make up regarding 50 percent of the population, UNICEF said. According to UNICEF, there has also been an alarming increase in the number of victims in the West Bank, including many children.
