According to the mediator Qatar, Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas are still a long way from reaching an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages. The situation remains “very complicated,” said Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari on Tuesday in Doha. The mediators USA, Qatar and Egypt had previously tried unsuccessfully to reach an agreement before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Monday.

“We are not close to an agreement,” said al-Ansari. The two conflicting parties might not “agree on language” to resolve their differences regarding the “implementation of an agreement.” All sides in the negotiations are now committed to “hopefully” reaching an agreement during Ramadan, the spokesman added. But he mightn’t give a timetable.

The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the brutal attack on Israel by the Islamist Hamas on October 7th, in which, according to Israeli information, around 1,160 people were killed and around 250 others were kidnapped as hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Since then, Israel has taken massive military action in the Gaza Strip. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, which cannot be independently verified, more than 31,100 people have been killed so far.
