A 38-year-old man was saved last Wednesday (1/3) by the Accident Detection on iPhones 14 following falling with his car into a canal near the city of Indiantown, in the United States.
According to the Martin County Police, in the state of Florida, the victim (whose name was not revealed) had an accident around 1 am following trying to avoid an animal. The man ended up getting stuck in the canal with no way to get his smartphone to call for help.
The force of the impact caused the iPhone to call emergency services, which, in turn, managed to arrive at the accident site in just eight minutes. As the channel was in a rural area, according to the authorities, if the iPhone did not call for help, the victim would have been trapped in the vehicle at least until dawn.
If that phone hadn’t made the call, chances were it wouldn’t have been found before dawn, five hours later. We are in South Florida, and there are animals in these channels, such as alligators and snakes, which might pose an additional danger.
The man was found by the police in a state of hypothermia, which only reinforces the thesis that he probably would not have survived if he had stayed there much longer. The message delivered by the iPhone reported the man’s latitude and longitude with an estimated search radius of seven meters.
According to WPBF 25 News, the victim was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries. The man is expected to make a full recovery in the coming days.
Crash Detection uses the gyroscope, accelerometer and an algorithm developed by Apple to work. If it detects an accident, the feature gives the user ten seconds to act; if he does not respond, a ten-second countdown is made (this time with sound and vibration alerts) until the emergency services are finally activated.
The feature is exclusive to iPhones 14 [Plus] e 14 Pro [Max] and Apple Watches Series 8, SE (second generation) and Ultra.
