A fair held in West Springfield, in the state of Massachusetts (United States), would have caused an increase in the number of calls to the emergency service — and the reason behind this would be the Accident Detectiona feature introduced with the iPhones 14.
According to police, since the start of the fair, there have been “abandoned” calls at the same location as the event, which led authorities to conduct checks — potentially affecting responses to real emergency situations.
In an interview with WWLPSergeant Joseph LaFrance of the West Springfield Police Department shed light on the issue:
We believe the settings apply to newer phones with the “Accident Detection” feature. If the phone detects an impact or possible car accident, the person has 20 seconds to cancel the call, and if they don’t, the phone will automatically dial 911. This has been known to be activated by people on roller coasters and other amusement park rides.
Although false calls are rare, local authorities highlighted that it is crucial to avoid wasting emergency resources so that all teams are ready for real situations during the fair.
In light of the increase in accidental 911 calls, police are requesting that:
If possible, leave your devices with someone who is not going to the rides to avoid new false calls; When calling by mistake, people should remain on the line and explain the reason for calling.
Apple, worth remembering attempted to resolve the issue with iOS 16.1.2, aiming to reduce false alarms on 911. Still, it’s important to mention that the feature can be manually disabled to prevent accidental calls.
