World leaders recently approved a new political declaration aimed at strengthening international cooperation and global solidarity at the highest political levels to accelerate progress towards universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030.
This declaration, resulting from the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (HIM), is seen as a determining and essential element for the international community to take significant and bold measures and to mobilize the political commitments and financial investments necessary to achieve the target of universal health coverage of the development objectives sustainable by 2030, indicated on Tuesday, l’OMS in a press release.
The UHC target measures countries’ capacity to ensure that every person receives the health care they need, when and where they need it, without facing financial hardship. It encompasses the full range of essential services, whether health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation or palliative care.

“Universal health coverage is a choice, a political choice. The political declaration that countries approved is a strong sign that they are making this choice. However, it is not just done on paper. It is part of budgetary and political decisions. Above all, it translates into investments in primary health care, which is the most open, equitable and effective path to universal health coverage,” underlined WHO DG Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, quoted in the press release.
Once the political declaration is adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, its implementation will be regularly monitored in order to identify gaps and solutions to move forward more quickly. It will also give rise to a debate at the next high-level meeting of the United Nations in 2027.
