Acaden Lewis, D.C. Basketball Star, Commits to University of Kentucky

Acaden Lewis, a standout basketball player from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., officially revealed his college commitment on Saturday, choosing to play for the prestigious University of Kentucky. Friends and family gathered in the local gym, a place of deep personal significance to him, to celebrate this milestone in his budding career.

Wearing a University of Kentucky T-shirt, Lewis addressed the enthusiastic crowd, stating that he is excited to join the Wildcats under head coach Mark Pope after graduating in 2025. “Honestly, just grateful that I get to play at the University of Kentucky … outside of basketball, the system being a fit and everything, Pope and his staff made me feel like the priority, like the only person they really wanted,” he expressed during a post-announcement briefing with reporters.

Lewis spoke fondly of the Trinidad Recreation Center, the Northeast D.C. gym where he honed his basketball skills. “This is actually where I started my career. My first workout ever was on this court,” said the rising star, acknowledging the efforts of Coach Pope and his staff in making multiple visits to his cherished gym and neighborhood.

“As much as they were here, they came to Trinidad, they came to the barbershop, those are two places that really mean a lot to me. I’ve had the same barber my whole life, lived here my whole life,” he added, highlighting the connections he cherishes in his community.

Surrounded by a supportive group that included his parents, coaches, teammates, and close friends, Lewis marked this significant day with gratitude and joy. “We’re super excited for him. He’s put the work in and it’s coming to fruition. It’s been a long journey but deserving end,” reflected Jarett Lewis, his father, emphasizing his son’s discipline and commitment. “This is the compilation of a lot of hard work.”

Outside the rec center, community fathers took charge of the grill, preparing hot dogs and hamburgers for the crowd that came out to show their support. The atmosphere was filled with pride and celebration as people came together to honor Acaden’s achievements and future endeavors.

“I’m very proud of him, this is my first year playing with him, I’m a freshman on his team, he’s been teaching me a lot and I’ve definitely seen his grind, he’s been working a lot,” remarked Jadah Washington, a fellow freshman on the Sidwell Friends team, capturing the essence of camaraderie and respect within the team.
